Prevent Heart Disease by Brushing Your Teeth

A recent study of more than 11,000 adults has provided further evidence linking gum disease with heart problems. The study was carried out on 11,000 adults and although the link has been made researchers have stated more research needs to be conducted to confirm whether poor oral health causes heart disease or is a marker of risk.

The British Medical Journal published data collected on individuals lifestyle behaviours, such as smoking, exercise and their oral health. The participants were asked how frequently they visited the dentist and how often they brushed their teeth. of the 11,000 individuals studied six out of 10 said they visited the dentist every six months and seven out 10 reported brushing their teeth at least twice a day.

The study was conducted over 8 years and during this time their were 555 reported ‘cardiovascular events’ of which 170 ended in fatality.

The research suggests that individuals who fail to brush their teeth twice a day are putting themselves at risk of heart disease. It is known that inflammation in the body, including the mouth has an important role in the build up of clogged arteries, which can be a precursor for a heart attack.

Looking back over the study taking account of factors known to affect an individuals risk of heart disease including social class, weight, smoker status and family background, the study found those with the worst oral hygiene had a 70% increased chance of developing the heart problem compared with those who consistently brush their teeth twice a day.

“The link between oral health and heart disease will need to be explored further to truly understand whether the link is in fact causal or whether it is merely a risk marker.” stated the study’s leader Professor Richard Watt. Could it be in fact that poor oral hygiene which is often associated with other well-known factors such as smoking and poor diet is just a result of this lifestyle.

Is it simply that an individual conscientious enough to brush their teeth twice a day has the same level of concern with the their diet and lifestyle?

Judy from the British Heart Foundation stated “Good personal hygiene is a basic element of a healthy lifestyle. If you want to truly help your heart, you should eat a balanced diet, avoid smoking and take part in regular exercise.”
