Medical Plan

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Are you looking for an affordable health insurance or a private medical plan? Rather than waiting for treatment through the NHS a medical plan will provide cover for allowing you to receive your treatment privately. No two people are alike so it is important to select the right medical policy, with so many medical plan options it can be confusing so we set have set out some common options to think about when selecting your health plan.

Basic, mid-range or comprehensive medical plan?

A medical insurance plan id built around inpatient cover and will pay for in-patient and day care costs in full but the level of cover for out-patient treatments and consultations can vary wildly between each medical plan.

A basic medical plan will concentrate on inpatient cover with very little outpatient cover or additional benefits. A mid-range or comprehensive health plan is more likely to cover out-patient consultations, other diagnostic tests & scans as well as physiotherapy and alternative medicines. The more comprehensive your medical plan the more expensive it becomes.

Additional health plan options?

Depending on your medical plan requirements, there are some options to increase or reduce the level of cover provided

Options to increase medical plan cover?

  • Adding in-patient & out-patient psychiatric cover to your medical policy would see premiums increase by around 7%.
  • Including alternative medicines, such as osteopathy & homeopathy in your medical plan could see an increase in premiums of roughly 6%.
  • Adding dental & optical to your medical plan could increase monthly premiums by around £10 p/m per adult and £5 p/m per child.

Options to reduce medical plan premiums?

  • Choose a six-week wait option on your medical plan, it does mean you agree to undergo your treatment on the NHS if the waiting list is less than 6 weeks long  however you could see a reduction in premiums of approximately 20%.
  • Include an excess on your medical plan a £250 excess could see a 15% reduction in premiums.
  • Choose a reduced hospital list on your medical policy, this usually means you are only covered to receive treatment in private wards of NHS hospitals but it can often trim medical plan premiums by over 25%.
