Health Insurance Tax

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Looking to buy an affordable health insurance plan? Whether an individual, couple or family health plan you will pay for the premiums via your net pay, pay after tax. As the income you are using to buy the health cover has already been subject to income tax and national insurance contributions there is no additional health insurance tax to pay on you premiums. Insurance rates do include an insurance premium tax (IPT) which is at the standard rate of 5%.

If however you receive health insurance from your employer and your earnings are over a certan threshold you may be liable to tax on any premiums paid on your behalf , this tax is known as P11d.

Whether you buy your own medical insurance or receive it through your employer there is no tax on any benefits claimed.

Tax is a complex area and you should check details with your local tax office which can be found on the HMRC website.
