This is a general step–by–step process for making a health insurance claim, this process may differ from provider to provider so it is best to read through your policy documents. It is important to read your policy documents to understand your insurers specific process.
| Step 1 | Visit your GP | Other than being admitted to accident and Emergency if you are suffering from an illness or injury the first port of call is your GP, your GP wil make an initial diagnosis and if required refer you the appropriate specialist. |
| Step 2 | GP Referral | If your GP deems it necessary to refer you to a specialist you will need now need to consider your health insurance cover. |
| Step 3 | Call Insurance Provider | Before you receive any treatment privately, you should call your insurance provider to check that you are covered for the treatment that you require. |
| Step 4 | Complete Claims Form | Having spoken to your health insurance provider and confirmed the treatment required is covered you will then need to complete a claim form which will include a patient section that you complete, and a GP section that will need to be completed by your doctor. The patient section will usually ask for your name, date of birth, contact details, insurance policy number and a description of your medical condition. |
| Step 5 | Receive Treatment | You can now visit the specialist who may then recommend further tests which might include admission to hospital as a in–patient or day–patient. |
| Step 6 | Paying Treatment Bills | Most hospitals and some specialists have their bills paid directly by the insurance provider. Others will send the bills to you, if you do receive bills direct many of the health insurance providers will ask you to forward them the bill so they can pay directly. Remember, if you have chosen to pay an excess, you will still have to incur this cost for the claim |
| Step 7 | Further Treatment Required | It is important to stay in contact with your insurance provider and make them fully aware of any further treatment you may require, they will be able to confirm whether any further treatment you plan to receive is within your cover. |
