A family health plan is designed to provide health insurance for you and your family. Given that every family is different it is important to choose the right family health cover that best suits your needs. Finding affordable health insurance for the whole family is a real possibility with such competition in the health insurance market.
When quoting for a family health plan we compare over 22 different family health cover providers to make sure we find you the most competitive rates. Still, having so many family health insurance options can be confusing so we have set out some common factors to consider when choosing your cover.
Basic, mid-range or comprehensive family health cover?
All reputable family health plans will pay for in-patient and day care costs in full but the level of cover for out-patient treatments and consultations can vary considerably between policies. Health insurance is designed around in patient treatment thus basic plans will focus on covering in patient and day patient treatment with very little if any outpatient cover and additional benefits.
A mid-range plan will have a level of outpatient cover but will tend to have a cap per policy year of say £1000 outpatient treatment per policy member. Comprehensive family health cover is likely to cover out-patient consultations, other diagnostic tests & scans in full rather than a having a monetary cap per policy year.
The more comprehensive the plan the greater the level of additional benefits, with comprehensive family health cover you can expect alternative medicines, home nursing and even overseas treatment to be covered to an extent.
Additional family health cover options?
Depending on your family health plan requirements, there are some options to increase the level of cover provided:
- Adding in-patient & out-patient psychiatric cover to your plan could see premiums increase by approximately 7%
- Including alternative medicines such as osteopathy & homeopathy in your fcover would see premiums jump up by around 6%
- Adding dental & optical cover to your policy would add approximately £10 p/m per adult and £5 p/m per child to your premiums.
Options to reduce family health plan premiums?
- Choosing a six-week wait option means that you agree to undergo your treatment on the NHS if the waiting list is less than 6 weeks long however if you are willing to wait this could reduce premiums by around 20%.
- Add an excess to your family medical plan, with an excess you are willing to pay for a proportion of you claim however a £100 excess could see a 5% drop in premiums.
- Choose a reduced hospital list which tends to mean your cover is limited to private wards in NHS hospitals but if the niceties of a private hospital is not requrie then this could trim premiums by over 25%.
